7-15-04 Capitol/Capital
This is another pair of tricky words, although it shouldn't be. “Capitol,” with an “o,” is used solely to refer to a building. If it refers to the building in which the U.S. Congress holds its session, it is capitalized. In reference to buildings in which state legislatures meet, it can be capitalized but is frequently not.
All other uses require “capital,” with an “a.” Examples include:
The city or town that is the seat of government for a country or state: St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota.
A city or town recognized as having special significance in a given field: In the days of Sun records, Memphis was the capital of rockabilly music.
 An upper case letter.
Wealth or assets: Many dot-coms imploded due to a lack of capital.
