arther Further 8-15-03
We continue to see confusion regarding farther and further. Knowing which to use isn't too difficult if you remember that farther refers to actual, physical distances, while further refers to abstract distances. Here are some examples:
 You drive a golf ball farther.
 Practicing your swing will further improve your game.
 We decided to drive 30 miles farther before stopping for lunch.
 While in the car, we further discussed our business plan.
 We walked farther along the path to the floor of the Grand Canyon than we did last year.
 Studying Eastern philosophy has taken John further on his path to enlightenment.
